Do you always get sore throat?

Viral pharyngitis. The oropharynx is swollen a...Image via WikipediaOne of my good friend, MJ, who is also a voice coach has this problem. She easily get her sore throat and it will be cured for only few weeks and it will return. I was really concern so i did my research.

She always say that her throat is always itchy and sometimes with burning sensation. One sign before you get fever, flu and tonsillitis is sore throat.

Sore throat is mad e by stretococcus bacterium. One main reason why people get this is beacuse of poor and unhealthy diet high intake of unrefined carbohydrates, too much sweets. Like those in biscuits, table sugar, etc.

Stress, smoking and drinking are the reasons why our bodies reduce it's resistance against infections. You should add enough Vitamin D and E to your daily diet to avoid sore throat. Vitamin D can be found in fatty fish. That's why you have to be in a fish diet if you have sore throat. This will prevent infections and provide healthy immune system.. While Vitamin E can be found in Avocado, Olive oil, nuts and seeds.

So always remember prevention is still better than cure.

Congenital and conductive deafness.

I visited an old friend last Tuesday, I had a great time talking and catching up but that wasn't the one that i really can't forget, it was my friend's niece. She was just around 2 years old. I called her but she didn't react or respond.

Then i found out that she was deaf. My friend told me that it was Congenital deafness. And she is planning to send her to speech classes the moment the kid started schooling. I was really concern because this is the first time i saw somebody that is deaf at a very young age.

So the moment i arrived i started my research about different type of deafness, and here's what i found.

Congenital deafness is one type of deafness that started from the moment you were born. It's like you already show hearing defects since you were young. People don't usually react to different sounds that surround them.

You will know if a child has these kind of hearing defects if he's old enough to talk but still doesn't talk. They should be wearing hearing aids and should undergo some speech training. Congenital deafness usually started from mothers who has German Measles.

Conductive deafness is a hearing loss that is cause by a defect of the external canal and the middle ear.

Want to grow taller?

Have you ever thought of being taller? A lot of my friends would love to be taller. Lucky for me I'm tall enough for my age..... i guess. There are ways to be taller, There are operations that will help you to add more height.

A good example is The Fitbone technology.

Fitbone Technology was originally intended to correct shortened or deformed limb bones caused by injury, disease or other causes like congenital defect. Today, it is the latest technology in limb lengthening and strengthening. Through this technology, an individual can gain up to 180 mm in height in about six months.

The Fitbone procedure is much safer to use and simpler to perform compared to the conventional bone extension surgery methods known today. Unlike the external frame that is bulky and seen on the outside, the Fitbone is placed intramedullarily or inside the bone. Fitbone uses a steel implant that gradually lengthens when activated by a wireless control unit. The device is inserted into the hollow of a bone that has been cut crosswise. The device, activated by the remote control unit, increases in length at 1 mm a day. The bone's cut ends grow and fuse eventually.

But if you're still young, then you don't need Fitbone a simple balanced diet would be perfect. If you're small and your afraid that your kids will inherit your genes, then try to give them a well balanced diet.

milk is high in calcium, Vitamin b and protein, Enough sleep is also needed because this will increase growth hormone to make them taller. It's really our choice to make our children and ourselves taller naturally or not.

Nurture yourself everyday.

There are days that we tend to forget ourselves. We are so busy that we even forget to change clothes or eat dinner. Give your self some time to breathe everyday.

Relax that vacation is useless if you can't take your mind off your work(guilty!) Be in the moment. Meditate. Its' an excellent way to let go of worries, concentrate and free up your activity.

Let go of guilt, guilt, every mom's constant companion, can ruin your self-nurturing plans. Think of yourself as a cellphone: If your battery is drained, you're absolutely useless. Go and recharge.

Manage time. Examine your day and minimize, if not eliminate, time wasters, such as mindless TV watching; e-mails; purposeless web surfing; video games; chatting on the telephone or endless texting and commuting or driving in traffic ( try leaving the house earlier to minimize travel time, and getting stuck in traffic jam)

Next time you tell yourself that you don't have time, remember: You can find the time.

Are you having too much of everything?

I just came from Church today, and thought that the topic today is worth sharing. I don't want to sound like a preacher or something. But i just wanted to tell everyone that to be able to move on to our lives, is we really have to take care of our body.

God gave us so many blessings but people abuse it. how?

He gave us the blessings of abundant food and drink, but what do we do? we abuse it. we don't take care of it. We eat too much, we drink too much, we forget that everything has limitations. So in the end, what do we get? Diabetes, Cancer, Different diseases and illness.

God gave us those blessings in order to live, be healthy and of course be happy, but when is happiness too much? How will you know if its too much? If you're feeling the pain already? If you're starting to get tired, stressed, sick, depressed?

He gave us the blessing of freedom. Freedom to choose. Do we choose what we eat? or do we just eat and then choose. We can enjoy our freedom. We can do whatever we wanted to. but we have to be responsible enough of our bodies. When are we going to start? around 40?

I think I'm beginning to sound like my grand mother! hahaha! I sometimes feel guilty of these too, who don't? but hey, some people just need some little reminders right? a little warning won't hurt.

How to lose the holiday weight gain.

Thanksgiving, Christmas, New year. So many holidays and of course........ feast! who doesn't love to eat right? especially when everybody is enjoying eating and having fun. But of course sometimes we tend to forget our diet, counting calories, food portions. etc. I'm sometimes guilty of this too.

Here are some tips that hope to help you lose some holiday weight gain.

1. Eat fruits and vegetables. They'll give you more food and less calories. You just came out of holiday feast so better start eating healthy foods and gain power not fat.

2. Spice things up. A little salsa can add a lot of flavor to a baked potato-and for few calories. I know, many people may not like to eat boring or bland healthy foods. So spice up your food a little.

3. For sweets. just grab low-fat yogurt instead of ice cream. There are many low fat yogurts around nowadays. You might thought of grabbing a low fat ice cream, but better not.

4. Besides cutting calories, a high fiber diet help prevent cancer, heart disease and digestive illness. So wake up with an oatmeal breakfast or just get a high fiber lunch and your off to lose weight.

5. Exercise everyday. Oh yes! You ate a lot last holiday, so lose that fat!

Everything may seem to be very hard, but i still think that if you put your heart to it. I mean discipline is one major key to lose weight! We still have few more holiday feasts to come so if you think you are having a hard time to lose weight. Then control yourself.

Evil boss = Heart Disease

I just want to share something that i think a lot of people would benefit. Especially those who are working. Few years ago, I worked with an International company that i really, really like, but there is just one problem...... my boss. Well, at first i thought it was just me, but then i found out that almost everyone i know in the company are all planning to leave because of our boss.

I've been stressed and yes i quit. but i still consider it as a great experience, but did you know that Those kind of bosses may increase the risk of heart disease of their subordinates.

I got this news that a team from Sweden have found a link between bad leadership and the risk of heart related diseases and heart attacks among (3,000) employed men.

Study shows that the effect may be cumulative - the risk went up the longer an employee worked for the same environment, same company and same boss.

This research study was published in occupational and environmental medicine.

Stressful environment

Experts said that the feeling of not valued and unsupported at work can cause a lot of stress, which often encouraged unhealthy behaviors, such as lack of sleep, smoking, drinking etc that can lead to heart disease.

Their studies has also shown that unfair bosses can drive up their employees' blood pressure, and persistent high blood pressure can increase heart disease risk.

It just shows that having a good working relationship with your manager may help to protect you against heart disease..

Don't forget your annual check up.

Just last Saturday i went out to bring my mom to her doctor. She doesn't like to do annual check up, because she believes that you only visit your doctor if you feel something strange or your not feeling well.(So wrong) I always tell her, Its' not about that. It's more than that. I explained to her that if there's something wrong with her health it's like a given early opportunity to address her problems. So what should be checked to maintain good health?

So compute your body mass index to see if you are still within your ideal body weight.Being overweight as a young adult or even as a child will soon catch up with you in the form of many chronic conditions as you grow older.

Have your blood pressure taken. Many have access to a clinic at their workplace or even at a local health center. Hypertension maybe detected this early, and elevated BP may be even lead to the discovery of other conditions such as kidney disease.

Eye examinations should also be performed every year. This may diagnose certain eye conditions that need medical attention. You may also find an explanation for the frequent headaches you may have been having- an error of refraction. Why suffer for a long a time when just a pair of corrective lenses can dramatically improve your quality of life.

Guilty chocolate lovers?

Chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate. Who wouldn't want it? a lot of people just can't resist even the smell of it. I am one of those people who is guilty of this but, i just got this news about how a simple brisk walk could reduce chocolate cravings.

Most of us know the benefits of different exercises and how it help people to manage their lifestyle especially those smokers and those who've been to different drugs. The researchers now has shown that this concept may be true for different food cravings.

In London, Researchers held a study for three days of abstinence, They asked 25 people who are chocolate fanatics to have a 15- minute of brisk walk or rest. A professor in Exeter University, Adrian Taylor tells that they were having a study how physical activities reduces cigarette cravings and this study is the first one that has linked exercise to lessen your chocolate cravings.

They all engaged those chocolate lovers to tasks that would normally induce their chocolate cravings. All participants who exercise showed a much lower chocolate cravings compared to those who just rest.

And guess what ladies this study showed that 97% of women experienced those cravings compared to men whose only 68%. Chocolate has active constituents that enhance our moods, that's why it may help us to relax, especially when were stressed. But eating chocolate might turn into habit. So you may want to take a brisk walk before you grab a chocolate.

Brain Exercise. Squeeze your head.

Brain exercise or mind exercise, what do we get from it? Last time, i gave you the foods that will help you increase your memory. Now, I'm here to share to you on how you can help your brain. Don't forget that not only our body needs exercise, our mind as well.

When i was in high school(third year to be exact) My math teacher never forgets to give us some mind exercise before we start our class. I hate it at first, but as weeks passed by. Me and my classmates began to enjoy it. Mind exercise not only helps you in your memory but it also helps in retaining mental capacity. It helps us to stay sharp as we age. And you never know it might also help to prevent age-related mental or memory problem such as dementia.

Here are some mind exercises that you can do anywhere.

  • Try to switch your wrist watch to your other arm, for example your watch is always on your right arm. Wear it on your left arm for a change. The next time you check the time. You might still be looking on your right arm.
  • Recite the alphabet backwards.
  • Try to remember the lyrics of an old song
  • play sudoku
  • Look at your enemies point of view. Ask yourself and answer.
  • Name all the movies you hate/like/
  • If your driving try to explore new ways.
  • Memorize your credit card number.

There are still so many ways to exercise our mind. So the next time you found yourself in a traffic. Stay cool and exercise your mind.

Bananas and breads for stomach pain?

All of us may have already suffered from stomach pain or the burning feeling. This discomfort on the upper part of the abdomen is called gastritis. This is usually caused by stress, excessive alcohol and caffeine, too much smoking and others. There are medicines that you can easily take in this kind of situation, but did you know that there are ways to prevent this burning feeling? that you may want to try just in case the medicine cabinet is out of reach?

1. Try to always eat on time. And or those small frequent meals. For example, eat breakfast around 7am in the morning, Try to eat banana around 10am. Eat lunch but not too much. Try to eat bread around 4 pm. Eat dinner by 7pm . Even if you are the busiest person in the world, Don't forget to take care of your tummy and eat on time.

2. Drink water.. but not to the point that you drown yourself. Water plays a good role in cleaning our stomach. You could try to drink just enough water every 20 minutes.

3. Banana is like the best fruit for me. And in this kind of situation bananas and breads could also help you. Aside from its convenience( you could easily bring bananas anywhere). It solves your hunger and it won't mess with your tummy.

4. Avoid spicy food. Such as chili peppers, vinegar, and even pure pineapple juice and frozen drinks might also irritate your stomach. Before you grab some medicine try to eat some food that can help calm your tummy. Like bananas, breads, veggies. And while eating try to relax yourself as well. And of course if symptoms persist you gotta see your doctor.

Why diet and exercise won't work for some people.

Diet and exercise doesn't work for most people? because maybe their not doing it right. as simple as that. That's why most people feel frustrated whenever they didn't meet their weight goals. or they're weight fluctuate. There are times that you may want to ask a professional to give you some ideas and advices if your own diet just won't work for you. But you might ask, My friend lose weight on her own? I can do it to right?

Well, my brother lost a lot of weight on his own too, why? because he's doing it the right way.

So what maybe the reasons why some diet and exercise wont' work for you.

You may not have a good plan. and or your diet is not balance with your level of
exercise.

You might be eating more than you think. You consume more saturated fats.

You forgot about portion sizes.

You don't have proper balance of carbs, proteins and fats. you can't lose weight if your undernourished.

a little discipline wont hurt, but you don't have to kill yourself. Enjoy your diet and exercise and don't think of it as a burden.

Healthy diet? Get nutty.

Almonds, peanuts, pistachio, cashew, walnuts, hazelnuts etc. Who doesn't like nuts?, I only know few people who dislike nuts, Mainly because of health problems and they can't take it. but the rest just all love nuts. When you start eating, sometimes you just can't stop. It's hard to tell yourself. " okay go get 3 pieces only! " We usually end up with a handful or two handfuls or even three. There is nothing wrong with that As long as you have to know when to stop. Nuts are usually high in calories when taken in large amounts. You should at least eat 2 ounces of nuts a week.

You may want to add nuts in your diet but you have to balance it. when nuts are combined with other very healthy foods, The results can be surprisingly remarkable. You can try to switch your unhealthy snacks to nuts, such as potato chips or high calorie cookies and chocolates. Nuts may not cure any diseases directly but its a step or a way to help battle those illness.

Here are the lists of benefits you get from being nutty, i mean from eating nuts.

It has arginine, a substance that may help you improve the function of your blood vessels.

Nuts has mono- and polyunsaturated fats, which is good for the heart. So if you love your heart eat nuts.

the omega-3 usually found in walnuts, another helpful fat that helps heart problems.

And finally nuts may helps you lower cholesterol. Again, good nutrtion works best with a well balanced diet. So don't just grab some nuts and eat as much as you can. Balance it. ! happy eating!

Tea party?! When is the best time to drink tea?

Tea. Whether it's green tea, black tea, white tea, red tea, name it i like it. I got this habit of drinking all sorts of health drinks, fruit juices, coffee, tea, milk etc. from my grand father. I admire him for having a healthy body and maintain it for such a long time. Even if he already passed away. He left our world not young. But very old and wise.

There are so many benefits of tea. but when is the best time to take it? My grandpa used to tell me that the best time to take tea is in the morning. It will help you boost your metabolism. It will also help you to feel better when your sick.

I still think that you can drink tea anytime you want but it depends on what type of tea you drink, Most green teas has caffeine, so if you'll love this type and like to drink a lot in the evening, you may want to drink less in the evening. but i think it would be ok to drink tea anytime of the day. If the tea is decaf then maybe a cup or two in the middle of night won't hurt your eyes. but if you love sweetened tea, A cup in the morning may be good for you but not too much at night.

So for all those who are not sure what time to drink tea, You may want to check what type of tea are you drinking and you can adjust from there. And you can host your own tea party. Have a great tea time!

Sleepy? Why lack of sleep may harm you.

Do you get better sleep? well, you must.

Just right after i finished college. The first job i got was in a call center, An outbound agent. And i was on a grave yard shift. That was (9pm until 6am) It was ok at first but after just 2 months i felt that i was lacking of sleep.

Even though i knew that i was sleeping around 7 hours a day, it wasn't easy sleeping in the morning. I tried to closed the door of my bed room and pulled down my curtain, but the broad day light was just peeking at my windows.

Of all the health complains i had while i was on that job. There was one thing i learned while working in that kind of environment that up to this moment, I still apply in my daily life. That is to complete your 8 hours of sleep. Why? Because there might be dangers waiting for you especially if you are working.

So what happens when you never complete your 8-hour sleep very often.

Poor vision. this is so true to me. I got blurry vision at work, or just when I'm walking to the elevator. It sucks so much. Short term memory, People tend to lose some parts of their memories due to lack of enough sleep.

Your reaction is slow. Have you ever felt that when everyone is laughing, you seem to be just smiling? why because you don't get it. because you don't understand. Or if somebody is talking to you. You seem to be somewhere else.

Never drive yourself to work if you think you can't focus. My dad caused a very long traffic when he doze off on a green light few years ago. That was humiliating so he got his self a driver.

Moody. you switch moods so easily. Poor performance. Your work suffers because you can't concentrate. So if you feel that you are stating to see these signs. better take a goodnight sleep. or tale some power naps in the afternoon.

Thyroid cancer, Symptoms and causes.

Thyroid Cancer, is something that everyone should know. Yesterday i went out with my friends, While were all waiting for our dinner One of my friend told me that she had a patient with a severe case of thyroid cancer. And it was so hard for her to tell the patient's relatives about her state. I think everyone should be aware about this kind of condition.

What are the Symptoms of thyroid cancer? The first thing that anyone should check is

the appearance of thyroid, but it doesn't mean that the person already have cancer.

Another thing is hoarseness of voice.

hard to swallow.

Difficulty breathing.

Lymph nodes on the neck.

If this is left untreated, thyroid cancer can spread and cause real harm to other parts of our body And this process is called metastasis. The exact cause of thyroid cancer is still unknown. Although there were things that have been listed that may increase the risk of developing thyroid cancer. Such as The family history, or if somebody in your family may have had this cancer before. The thyroid gland is enlarged, and even radiation exposure. If you think that you or one of your family has all the symptoms , don't hesitate and have yourself check.

Health food, The magic of soybean.

Tofu, soy milk, miso soup, etc. Are just some of the soy products i love. but as i grow up, I've learned that many products in the market are now selling soybean supplements, I have nothing against soya capsules, i just still believe that natural soybean are still the best one.

There are so many reasons why people use soya products as an alternative to dairy products:

For some medical reasons, People who has allergy to milk proteins or lactose intolerance take soya milk instead. Soy can reduce cholesterol
Soy products also help to control the cholesterol level because soybean is cholesterol-free. Soy has soluble fibers that helps to reduce the amount of cholesterol, That are circulating in the our body through our blood. The soy proteins also reduce the cholesterol level.most of the fats in soy products are helpful. It has soy isoflavones that may prevent atherosclerosis

It is known that in most Asian countries were traditional soy products are taken on a daily basis, their rates of cardiovascular diseases are low. Soy also improves the health of our bones. Soy products, such as soy milk, doesn't contain a lot of calcium but the soy isoflavones may help reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Many studies have suggested and shown that soy isoflavones may be a factor in helping to prevent bone loss.

But we all know that anything too much is bad for our health. Soya is no exception. So to be healthy do not just focus into taking just one kid of food. but to have a well balanced diet. and in your diet don't forget to include Soy.

Eating healthy part 2: Durian. The hate me or love me fruit

Is this a healthy food to try or a fruit to avoid?

Durian. The first time i tried this was when i was 11 years old, The smell is really bad, and i just don't like it.. But that was then,(when i was young i tend to hate odd looking fruits) Well, I like it now more than before. My sister often tells me that people has only two views for this fruit " Hate it or Love it" All i can say is that I'm in between. It is known in South and East Asian Countries as the "King of all fruits".

Tracy asked me last time about the fruit with porcupine type skin. Well, there were 3 fruits on my mind that day. But for now I'll post Durian first. The smell may repel you but it really tastes good. So, What are the health benefits that you could get from Durian?

Durian is packed with proteins, minerals, antioxidants and other phytonutrients.

I can still remember my granny used to tell me that you can't just pick this fruit from a tree and eat. You have to wait for this fruit to fall from the tree. And wait for few more days until it ripened before you can actually eat it. This fruit is known to be high in Tryptophan,

Tryptophan increases brain levels of serotonin and melatonin, both are known as sleep-inducing hormones. So it helps to relaxes your brain and get sleepy. This fruit maybe consider as a good sleeping aid. If your travelling to South East Asian Countries, you may want to give this fruit a try. Expect that the smell would be unpleasant but it's worth the try.

Eating healthy? Try dragon fruit.

Another healthy food to add in your healthy diet is Dragon fruit. This dragon fruit is really new to me, but i know that it has been in the American/ Asian market for ages. I'm just curious how so many people in my country are now getting into this, This fruit was originally from Mexico,South America, Vietnam,Taiwan and South East Asian Countries. And whenever a new and healthy food is out I always make it a point to try that "something new to me" food and prove it to my self.

So here's another one on my list, Dragon fruit. So what exactly is a dragon fruit? This unusual looking fruit, brightly colored and named Dragon fruit is also known as Pitaya. I heard there's a story behind why it's called Dragon fruit, but don't know the exact story.

At first, i found the fruit a little scary, because it reminded me of the plant from that movie" little shop of horrors " the plant that feeds on human blood and flesh. hahaha! (I'm sorry but i was six then, and even though it was a comedy movie it scared the hell out of me.) But this fruit won't eat you but you will eat this fruit.

This healthy food is rich in vitamins and minerals especially vitamin C. Here are the rest of the nutrients that you can get from the dragon fruit.

Protein, Niacin

Fiber,Iron

Vitamin C, Riboflavin, Calcium, Vitamin A

It also has antioxidants, and we all know how antioxidant helps our body to prevent certain diseases or even cancer. This is one vitamin-packed fruit. The dragon fruit is best eaten by cutting the fruit in half and scooping the flesh out, like eating a sherbet. And best eaten when chilled. Stretch marks, Mother's nightmare.

Stretch marks and losing weight are the most common problems after giving birth. When i gave birth to my first daughter, I never had much problems when it comes to losing weight and skin problems. My skin never turned dark or uneven, I didn't gain that much weight, so what's to lose? I thought that if i get pregnant again, things will be just the same......not!

Last year when i was still pregnant on my second baby, I was so surprised when i noticed that some parts of my skin are getting darker and uneven. I've gained more weight than i thought i could. I didn't add lbs til i was on my 7th month when I've noticed that I'm getting heavier than before.

But the worst thing that i never thought would happened to me were the stretch marks,(oh, so unlucky of me) up to know I'm still following some routines to make it go away.. but of course i know that my skin will never be the same again, I already accepted that fact. (sigh)

Here are some good news for mommies like me who are also having the same problems. My doctor advised me to try creams that may reduce the visibility of stretch marks. Retin A and Renova- are creams that help to reduce wrinkles and treat dark spots and roughness of skin, It is also good to reduce stretchmarks.

Based on studies 80% of patients are happy with the results with continued use for 6 months. Retinoids from these products are helps to promote cell growth or regeneration in the upper layer of the skin, and it also help in to complete the collagen in the lower layer of the skin. but of course it still varies to different types of people. You may want to consult your doctor first.

Healthy food, dried fruits?

Dried fruit and nuts on a platter, traditional...Image via WikipediaHealthy food:Dried fruits or frozen fruit, which one is better? I love fruits no matter how it's done dried, frozen and of course fresh.

The nutrients of dried fruits depends on how long the fruit was around before it was dried. Some commercial dried fruits may contain an additional sulfur dioxide which can lead to asthma for some people, Now, you might be asking why sulfur? The sulfur is used to "fix" the color of the fruit.

But there are also no-sulfur dried fruits available in stores that you can try. So, what nutrients do you get from dried fruits? Here are some vitamins that you can get from dried fruits

Vitamin A, B1, B2, B3, B6,

pantothenic acid

and minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium,

phosphorus, potassium, sodium, copper, manganese)(courtesy of Wikipedia).

And because of water loss, that was experienced while it was dried. Dried fruits has a stronger taste or flavor. But these process also destroys most of the Vitamin C in the food, The levels of Vitamin C has been greatly reduced compared when it was fresh.

But i just want to share my favorite dried fruit... mangoes. i love 7D dried mangoes, This is just the best dried mangoes on the planet.
